Something for the weekend- Premier Cru Burgundy

By Fergal Gleeson

Marchand & Burch Clos du Roi Premier Cru 2018

The Clos du Rou (King’s enclosure) in Beaune , Burgundy has a rich history as a source of wine for the royals of Versailles.

It’s a Premier Cru designated vineyard and considered one of the best sites in the Beaune district.

The Clos du Roi vineyard- note the weathered looking medieval wall at the base of the hill

2018 Beaune Clos du Roi Premier Cru is rich and opulent on the nose. There’s an impressive palate weight and strawberry, dark cherry fruit flavours finishing with slate/ graphite.

Biodynamic, 30% whole bunch, 25% new oak.

Each district in Burgundy has it’s own characteristics: Gevrey Chambertin – structure, Volnay – delicacy. There’s a softness and approachability to this wine which is Beaune’s main marker.

Drinking beautifully now, the winemaker suggests it can cellar for up to 20 years. Like all the Marchand & Burch range it’s under screw cap.

Marchand & Burch Volnay Fremiets Premier Cru 2018

Volnay Fremiets Premier Cru opens with a heady and floral nose.

The ‘E’ word – ‘ethereal’ is frequently used to describe Pinot Noir. It’s never more applicable than when describing Pinot from the Volnay district which is delicate and often as lightly coloured as Rose.

This release also has dark cherry, crunch, acid and delicious tannins which provide a light grip and moreish quality.

The Fremiets Vineyard in Volnay, Burgundy

The Fremiets vineyard is premier cru and so the wine is concentrated but overall the vibe is pretty and fresh.

By the the way a horse drawn plough is not some antiquated practice. A horse is favoured because it reduces soil compaction compared to a tractor and so is better for the vines’ health.

It’s all in the detail when making fine wine!

Marchand & Burch Vosne Romanee 2018

Vosne Romanee is quite a drink… mouthfilling, full bodied and seductive.

This is a powerful Pinot Noir with intense fruit flavours that burst across the palate.

It combines power and opulence with smooth tannins.

The district of Vosne Romanee contains some of the most famous vineyards in the world. Grand Cru wines from Romanee- Conti, Richebourg and La Tache are the stuff of fantasy for wine lovers.

Village Vosne Romanee like this while still a luxury item are more feasible.

This is beautiful drinking now but (like the Volnay Fremiets) will make your eyes roll in 10-15 years. That’s when the magic happens ….
