Something for the Weekend- Zinfandel

By Fergal Gleeson

Cape Mentelle Zinfandel 2018

Cape Mentelle make Australia’s most famous Zinfandel.

They describe their Zin as the ‘perennial cult classic’. Zinfandel is associated with California and founder David Hohnen fell in love with the varietal while studying winemaking on America’s west coast in the early 70’s.

Plantings are small hence the ‘cult’ billing but Cape Mentelle have mastered this notoriously unruly variety in the vineyard and in the winery.

The 2018 is as ever full of character. Bright acid , inky depth, tobacco and tar sitting inside cherry and raspberry fruit.

The acid/ savoury/fruit mix has more in common with top end Italian reds than Shiraz or Cabernet.

Evolves in the glass over time it’s a riproaring and unique wine. Try the ‘wild one’!
