New Release- Cullen Wines Diana Madeline 2016

Cullen 2016 Diana Madeline HR

By Fergal Gleeson

Wine lovers get a little giddy at the sight of Diana Madeline. It is Australia’s most famous Cabernet blend. There was some heavy bidding for a bottle of the 1986 on Langton’s auction website recently which tells you all you need to know about it’s heritage, age worthiness and desirability. It’s that sort of wine.

2016 is 93% Cabernet, 5% Merlot with a dash of Malbec and Petit Verdot. The richness and depth of the fruit is immediately apparent and there’s a lightness to it. The tannins are good, adding some leafy notes.

It drinks very well now which is not something you can often say about young Cabernet icons. They are often built to cellar but overwhelming in their youth.

The enigma of the wine is it’s power with just 12.5% alcohol. The lighter touch allows the vitality of the fruit to shine without sacrificing persistence or complexity.

So heart flutters of anticipation prior to opening are justified. Expect bidding to be strong for the 2016 Diana Madeline now and in 30 years time.

RRP $130              Rating 5/5
